Stations of the Cross

Each Friday evening during Lent we will pray the Stations of the Cross at 7:00PM. Why not resolve to try to attend the Stations each Friday evening. This is a prayerful way to enter into the Lenten spirit.

Who is Saint Valentine?

What we seem to be able to say for sure is that the one associated with February 14th died in 270, and was a priest in Rome. He assisted St. Marius with tending to the sick and wounded Christians who were imprisoned during the reign of Claudius II. Later, he was arrested and asked to renounce his faith. He
would not do this and so was sentenced to be beaten with clubs and then beheaded. This execution was done on February 14, which is the day we celebrate this Feast.

While little is known about the lives of any of the early Valentines, we can speculate a little more about why the name and date became associated with romantic love. Some historians recount the early Roman custom of boys drawing girl’s names on February 15th as a celebration to honor the pagan goddess of fertility, Februata Juno. The bishops supposedly “baptized” this holiday by substituting the girl’s names with the names of Saints, Valentine being the most popular name because of the proximity of his feast day.

For our modern practice of exchanging cards and gifts and calling your sweetheart “Valentine”, we must look for a more recent origin. In the Middle Ages, in France and England, it seems that February 14th was first associated with lovers because that was the date tradition had it that birds would pair off to mate for the spring. According to the romantic literature of the 14th and 15th centuries, it was common on this day to send a love token or a letter to your desired mate, in imitation of the birds. Since this day also was the feast day of St. Valentine, the practice arose of calling the one you sent the token to your “Valentine”. So it turns out that the cards we exchange have nothing to do with the Saint at all, although I am sure he would be pleased at the expression of
love done in his name.

Some people today might look at the pagan origins of this holiday and write it off as un-Christian and therefore something we should discourage. You find the same thing being said about Halloween and even Easter and Christmas! But the early Church absorbed many pagan celebrations and made them holy, by turning the purpose of the festivities towards God. And certainly God wants us to love one another. Christ himself, when asked what the greatest commandment is, replied, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matt 22:37-39)

Souper Bowl Thanks

Special thank you to the CYO students from Our Lady of Peace, Chelsie Delperuto, Kaithlin Haskell, Cory Rolince and Brandon Franklin for volunteering to collect for the Souper Bowl of Caring project. Thanks, too, to the parishioners who helped us raise $231 during this event.

Kitchen Renovation

We are in the process of renovating the kitchen. The majority of the work is being done to bring the kitchen into compliance with safety codes. We are installing a new exhaust hood and fire suppression system, and replacing the ceiling tiles with fire resistant ones. We are also installing a new deep fryer, which we will break in for our upcoming Lenten Fish Fry Dinners.

Parish Outreach – Evangelization

In the last few years, several new residential developments have appeared in the Lakeland/Camillus area. Last week we reached out to the residents of these new communities in an effort to help them “Get Connected”. We stuffed 275 mailboxes with flyers announcing our Mass and Reconciliation schedule. We visited Golden Meadows, Brantford Park, Country Creek, Timber Hills, and Country Oaks. In addition, the area’s four hotels/motels gladly accepted our mounted flyers for their weekend guests.

We welcome all new to the area Catholic Christians to our Church family.

World Marriage Day Celebration

The 26th Annual World Marriage Day will be celebrated at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Syracuse on Sunday, February 12 at 2:00PM
Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham will celebrate Mass and renew the marriage vows of all couples in attendance. Bishop Cunningham will honor couples
celebrating silver anniversaries, golden anniversaries and all celebrating an anniversary beyond 50 years in 2012. All couples are encouraged to attend.

The Third Option

“Rebuilding Trust in Marriage” Trust can erode or be broken but it can also be rebuilt. Sponsored by The Third Option, a program to build better marriages. We meet at Holy Cross Church, 4112 E. Prayer Group

“Pathways to Prayer” Prayer Group meets the first and third Monday of each month at Christ the King Retreat Center, 500 Brookford Rd., Syracuse. The next meeting is Monday, February 6 from 9:30 – 10:30AM. ”Whenever two or three are gathered in My Name, there I am in their midst.” Come for just an hour of prayer. Bring a friend, linger awhile, walk the grounds. Free will offering accepted, but not required.
